Tennis Doubles Team Advance

October 29, 2009
Ashe County Huskies

Courtney Bowers and Lizzie Hanes will continue their season as the doubles team did well enough in their regional to make it to the state tournament. Bowers and Hanes were a three-seed in the 2-A Mid-Western Regional.

In the first round, the Lady Huskies team defeated Rachel Wild and Caroline Hensley from Cuthbertson 6-1, 6-1. Bowers and Hanes were equally as dominant in the second round as they took down their opponents from West Stanly, Hannah Whitley and Brittany Beatty 6-1, 6-1. With those two wins, Bowers and Hanes qualified for the state tournament.

The semi-finals would put the third seeded Huskies against the second seeded team from Salisbury, Erika Nelson and Katelyn Storey. Unfortunately for Bowers and Hanes, the match did not go their way and they were defeated 6-1, 6-2. Up next was the consolation game for 3rd place. The Lady Huskies lost a hard fought match to Elizabeth Deeck and Kayte Hahn from North Stanly 6-4, 6-1.

"I'm very proud of Courtney and Lizzie. They are the only 2-A Mountain Valley Athletic Conference players going to the state tournament," said head coach Vickie Herman. Coach Herman also pointed out this will be the fifth time and six years that Ashe County High School has had a doubles team in the state tournament.

Bowers and Hanes were named to the 2-A All-Region team, and will also be going to the state tournament in Cary as a 4-seed. They will be facing the top seeded doubles team from Greene Central, Lauren Carraway and Elizabeth McLawhorn who won their third consecutive regional doubles championship. The tournament is this Friday and Saturday.
