SCR1 baseball: Back to the Basics this past summer

October 29, 2009
By TJ Young of Scotland Co High School

High School Baseball is back at Scotland County.  Well, at least it will be this spring.  Preparation for the upcoming season began this past summer as fifteen young men started what Head Baseball Coach T.J. Young called "Basic Training."  Fundamentals were preached all summer long from Coach Young along with assistant coaches:  Gary Miller, Les Richmond, and Tom McDaniel.

"As far as baseball talent goes, we are very raw," stated coach Young.  "We anticipate a good number of kids to go out for baseball this spring, and if this summer was any indication, we have a lot of fundamental work to do."

The coaching staff feels that the group of kids on the team have talent, for sure, but there are a lot of little variables that will determine whether or not the 2009 baseball season will be a success.  "As a baseball player, you have to be able to do three things very well.  Throw it, Catch it and Hit it.  Right now we have a bunch of guys that can do one or two of those things well.  If we can keep working with great attitude and effort like we did this past summer, all three of those basic baseball skills should get better."

Coach Young finshed by saying; "I think we are all very excited about bringing baseball back here.  There are a lot of eager young men ready to hit the ground running.  This past summer the boys were able to get comfortable with the coaching they will recieve over their time here.  The coaching staff was also able to get an idea of what we are strengths and weaknesses are as a ball club.  I think our coaching staff did a great job this summer coaching those kids up all the time.  With four coaches at practice every day, there was more individual attention to detail, which is what we need at this point in our maturation process."

The kids are ready, the coaches are ready.......is it baseball season yet??
