Red Devils Sweep Bulldogs

November 25, 2009
By Denis Vass of Graham High School

Graham traveled to Durham to take on the Bulldogs of Durham School of the Arts tonight in their season opener. It might not have looked good, but the Red Devils took home a triple-header sweep tonight.

The JV boys got things started with a 95-45 pounding of the Bulldogs in the night's first game.

In the girl's game, it was a case of a player-a-quarter. Kaila Lea led Graham the first quarter, scoring 8 of her game-high 13 points. In the second quarter, it was Caroline Enoch's turn, as she pumped in 8 of her 12 points. In the 3rd quarter, Logan Apple had the hot hand. Apple canned 3 3-point shots. Apple also scored 12 points for the game, all on 3-point shots. In the 4th quarter, with the 2nd and 3rd team getting playing time, freshman Kay Kay Wilson finally got on track, as she scored 5 points the final frame. Graham won handily, 61-32. Durham school of the Arts was led by Ayahin Hester, who was the lone Bulldog player in double figures with 14.

In the nightcap, the varsity boy's team struggled for a half to find their rhythm. The Red Devils committed 13 1st half turnovers. The Bulldogs clung to a 32-30 halftime lead. As is always the case when Graham travels to Durham, a bad case of foul trouble developed. Marquise Richmond and Ryan Henderson both were whistled for 3 1st-half fouls and were largely ineffective the first half. Justin Cousin scored 12 points in the opening half. Darion WIlliams grabbed 7 rebounds and had 2 blocks the 1st half.

Graham came out gunning the 3rd quarter. The Red Devils exploded for 30 3rd quarter points. Justin Cousin had 8 points, while Jereal Tate came off the bench and pumped in 13 points, Tate canned 3 3-pointers, while Cousin hit 2. The Red Devils held a 60-47 lead after 3 periods of play.

Cousin continued his torrid scoring in the 4th, as he scored 8 more points. He hit 2 more 3-pointers. Cousin ended with 32 points, and he hit 6 of 14 3 point attempts. Ryan Henderson finished with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Dominique Pass had 6 points, 11 assists, and 6 rebounds. Darion Williams finished with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Jereal Tate had 17 points and 4 rebounds.  The final tally for the game was 80-65.

Aaron Maye led the Bulldogs with 24 points. Brandon Shaw scored 16, while Tyree Johnson tossed in 12.

Graham's next game is Tuesday december 1st, when they host the Bulldogs of Williams High.
